Cross Country is a sport where athletes compete in distance races on various terrains. It is prevalent in most high schools and colleges as you can even obtain scholarships. At Wheeler, the Cross Country team is run by Coach Muller and Coach L. We have multiple high performing individuals on both the girl and boy teams. Overall, the teams are progressing to reach their goal of making it to State championships this year.

One of the most prominent runners at Wheeler is our star, Alex Dyck. He has won numerous awards in the State. He is two-time 3,200 meter champion in track for the AAAAAAA Region 2. This year he has won several awards in countrywide competitions. For instance, in the Cobb County Cross Country Championships at Allatoona Creek Park, Alex Dyck placed 1st place in the Boys 5k Run CC Varsity race. His time was 16:05.72 which is around 15 seconds faster than the 2nd place runner. Another race he placed first in September is the 5k race at Woodland High School. He competed against top runners from all over the County and finished with a time of 16:32.61. Alex Dyck has been running since early middle school years and has since been developing to reach the point at which he is at now.

I interviewed Alex Dyck about his experience with Wheeler Cross Country, and he stated, “I love the experience and the whole process of training, developing, and competing. Everyone on the team is part of the family, and we work together to improve and represent our school as best we can.” It seems that the cross country community and even the track community are very well built and connected. They welcome any new participants on the team who want to improve.

Come out and support Wheeler Cross Country at any of their meets and even their practices where they run laps around the whole campus. At first one might think cross country is just “running” but there is a lot that goes into the training and conditioning that can make the difference in a race. As you see, the difference in the times is sometimes just a few seconds. Another aspect is diets and sleep schedules. These are extremely important especially before a race as they affect your energy levels and stamina. If you want to learn more about the sport or the runners, talk to one of the coaches or runners, and they will be glad to help you.
