Movie Review: The Curse of La Llorona

The curse of La Llorona is a horror/mystery film. The cast includes Marisol Ramirez, who plays the part of La Llorona. This movie is directed by Michael Chaves.

There is a legend/folktale that talks about La Llorona, or the weeping woman. It tells of a woman who killed her two sons in rage after her husband cheated on her. After she realized what she did, she killed herself. Now, she looks for children to take her sons’ place; every night, people can hear a woman out in the streets crying and saying, “ay, mis hijos!” (which means “oh, my children” or “oh, my sons” in Spanish). They say La Llorona takes kids and drowns them. Parents tell their children this in order to make them obey or to keep them from staying out late at night.

Recently made into a major-motion feature, the movie takes place in LA 1973. A social-worker Anna goes to see a woman to inquire why her sons aren’t attending school. Anna finds the boys locked in a room, and the mother is arrested. Anna later gets a call that the boys had been drowned. She shows up, and the mother tells her that she was trying to protect her sons from “her,” and when she asks who she responds with “La Llorona”. Now, Anna’s house is being haunted by La Llorona, who wants her kids.

Many people say La Llorona walks at night wearing a white dress and looks for her drowned sons. She has supposedly been spotted in the United States.
