“Ask him about his cars, he really likes cars” Maithili Bhardwaj (12) noted about Dr. Jimmy Carter. Dr. Carter, the longest serving member of Wheeler’s faculty, has been teaching English since 1998. He is currently the department chair and he teaches American literature, British Literature, and AP Literature. He started his career at Wheeler as a substitute ESOL teacher, and he fondly recalled his job interview.

When asked about something unique in his classroom, Dr. Carter noted his use of toys. His class is filled with posters, and there is always music playing. Dr. Carter enjoys integrating fun with learning and his classroom because he wholly believes that it is possible.

Dr. Carter is amongst the most beloved Wheeler faculty, and his students have learned a lot from his class. “I really like the literary discussions that we have, and this class has allowed me to pursue my interest in reading,” Adrian Aswani (11) replied when asked about his favorite part of the class. “I like wearing the Clone trooper helmet,” another student, Gabe Bowman (11), noted. Most of all, Dr. Carter is known to his students as “understanding and caring,” as Dean Carver (11) discussed. As a final note, Dr. Carter added that he believes that “if I am not enjoying what I’m doing, then the kids aren’t either.”
