Taylor Swift’s announcement of her upcoming Eras tour had fans ecstatic. Fanatics crashed the Ticketmaster site after servers weren’t enough to host the 3.5 billion total system requests. Rightfully outraged, fans took to social media. The company is now under fire from congress, questioning the company’s monopoly on big show ticket sales. Lawmakers are arguing that the 2009 merger between Ticketmaster and Live Nation has caused no alternative to buying tickets and caused harm to consumers. Recently, Ticketmaster announced that they are no longer selling general public tickets. On resale sites, tickets are going for as much as $100,000. Fans are outraged, and many have threatened to sue the company. Taylor herself said, “(the Ticketmaster situation) is excruciating for me to just watch mistakes happen with no recourse.”
Self-proclaimed Swifty and Senior, Rhiddi Maheshwari, had this to say about the situation, “I love Taylor swift and was really looking forward to getting tickets for her tour until this happened. Now tickets are so expensive and I don’t even know when they are going to go back on sale again. It is really frustrating.” Sophomore, Nora Fettig said, “I have never been to one of her concerts and I really wanted to get my tickets early.”
Fans have voiced their distaste for the situation and think Ticketmaster should be held responsible. More than repercussions, most fans just want tickets. Taylor is set to open her tour Friday, March 17th, 2023. However, if ticket complications continue, dates could be pushed back, angering fans even more.
