It’s Game Time

School has officially started which means the beginning of endless Friday night football games. Wheeler Wildcats gained a great victory on the 11th in the scrimmage against the Pope Greyhounds. Our student section was like never before: full of energy and spirit. The theme for the first game was a whiteout, and the Wildcats definitely showered their spirit. Personally, just being in the student section this year has been an immense difference in the school spirit I have. I think all the grades, especially seniors, are ready for this football season by the looks of that first game. The student section has an impact on how our team does because we have had more sprint this year and we’ve been doing pretty well.

The score was a whopping 28 to 7. Within the first quarter we had already scored two touchdowns, and we were leading 14 to 0. As soon as our Wildcats scored, the student section immediately picked up the pace. The game started off very excitingly with a 50-yard touchdown pass by CJ Ogbana to Ricky White. The rest of the game was just as exciting as we scored three more times to put us up 28-7 for the win. Our JV also played hard to hold Pope’s JV team scoreless. Overall, the scrimmage went smoothly and had a massive turnout from Wheeler fans to put a positive outlook on the upcoming season.

Andy Feddersen gives us a very detailed response about his firsthand experience staying on the sidelines cheering on his team. He says, “The Wheeler Football team has a great environment for playing the sport. Our coaches are super supportive and will do anything to help us players no matter what we need. Coach Collins and his staff work tirelessly every day to get us the information and support to succeed on and off the field. I play quarterback and long snapper, but I am injured at the moment after suffering from a torn ACL last spring. Being injured is hard, especially because I have to sit on the sidelines and watch my family play the game I love. It is both exciting and difficult because I’m happy to see them do well and grow together but I also long to be apart of the process and journey. Based on the scrimmage with Pope and our first regular season win against Lambert last Friday, I believe that this season is going to go very well. We have numerous players that are being recruited by colleges and making a huge difference in the way we play with their leadership. Leadership is a big factor when discussing how teams will perform, and our players take this seriously. With our new positive attitude and outlook on the game, the only team that will be stopping us is ourselves.”
