HBO is a streaming service that offers a multitude of TV shows and Movies such as Euphoria, Dr. Who, Top Gear, and many more. However, HBO entered the spotlight because of its hit show, Game of Thrones, one of the highest-rated and most acclaimed TV shows. HBO has released and teased three hit movies, and during a time where theaters are avoided, HBO will certainly reap the benefits of these new films.
The new films released are Godzilla v.s Kong, The Justice League Snyder Cut, and Mortal Kombat. All three movies were highly anticipated, as the fan base for this movie genre is large and widespread.

The Snyder Cut was released first, on March 18th, and was a box office bomb. Since its release, however, its reception has improved, and it has earned high reviews on both IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes. Neel Gundavarapu (12) states that “The movie was good, and definitely an improvement from the last Justice League. It was really long, though, which I personally didn’t mind, but I guess I could see how it would turn people away from the movie.” Neel was correct about the movie’s length because, with a running time of four hours and two minutes, The Snyder Cut earns itself the title of the longest superhero movie of all time.

Godzilla v. Kong was the second movie to be released, making its appearance on March 31st, and made over $100 million at the box office. However, the overall reviews of the movie were not as positive as those of the Snyder Cut. Josh Musser (12) states that “I loved the big action scenes from the movie, but the story was a bit of a letdown for me. I mean, it is a monster movie, so what can we really expect. Overall, I enjoyed the movie, but it’s not really something I would want to watch over and over again.” Josh definitely had some valid points, as many reviewers agree with the sentiment that monster movies are just nonsense on a screen to pass the time, with no real story or any elements of a narrative. While this may deter some people from watching this movie, it is also the kind of movie that appeals to the inner child, and because of that, it has become such a hit.

Mortal Kombat has still not been released, but the speculations about the movie have been flying rampant. The movie is based on an extremely popular video game, also titled Mortal Kombat. The game has 11 installments, and with a franchise this large, the fanbase is also enormous. From what has been teased so far, the movie is very graphic and violent and is expected to have an R rating. Because of this, it is not exactly expected to perform extremely well at the box office, as R-rated movies reach a much smaller audience in theaters. However, it is still a very highly anticipated movie and has put even more eyes on HBO in the past few months.

These three movies are only a small fraction of the options available with HBO Max, but as more and more people flock towards these new movies, HBO becomes a real contender in the streaming world alongside Disney + and Netflix.
