Shaynna Avery (11) is a beloved veteran writer for The Catalyst this year. Avery, one of four returning members from the previous semester, is a reserved yet welcoming personality around the Catalyst. She originally joined the class because she wanted to learn more about journalistic writing, claiming she thought it would be a fun experience for herself. Since joining last year, Avery has found much to love about journalism, saying, “It is delightful, though overwhelming at times; I like that I can learn about the different writing styles, and it’s overall pretty interesting.” Additionally, Avery also enjoys the freedom of writing for the Catalyst, as there’s always something to take away from the interview experience.
Avery has also made quite an impact within journalism due to her welcoming personality. Kyla Durand (10) and Kamila Frietas (11) describe Avery as caring and considerate. Frietas remarks, “She’s nice, sweet, hilarious, and is a perfect friend. She always pushes me to do better.” Given Avery’s veteran status, she also acts as a guide to the class newbies. Overall, Avery is very amiable, accommodating, and friendly around class.
Mrs. Comstock (Catalyst Director/ELA Department) speaks to Avery’s growth over the past year. She reports, “Being her second year in the elective, she is [now] able to take on more of a leadership role with some staff writers to encourage their interest in writing. Shaynna will continue to grow as a staff writer through her willingness to put effort into all her tasks,” testaments reflective of Avery’s commitment to journalism thus far. Moving forward, Avery looks forward to writing even more pieces for the Catalyst and continuing to make strides as a writer, as she hopes to return to the class for her senior year.
