Suri Coleman (10) is a first-year staff writer for The Catalyst. Coleman is best described as tenacious, dedicated, and perfectionistic; she values her work and deeply cares about the product she releases; she is a writer of great integrity. She joined The Catalyst because she loves writing and figured she’d have a better time in newspaper journalism because it would enable her to write more [than yearbook journalism]. Coleman commented on her experience in the class:
“It’s probably one of the best environments I’ve been in, and I expected it to be incredibly hard, but it turned out to be one of the most supportive and welcoming classes I’ve ever had. I enjoy writing for The Catalyst, so I changed my schedule [to take Journalism again] next semester.”
Coleman’s final piece for the current semester will be an article on Finals Week; she says it will be one of her favorite written articles under The Catalyst thus far. Going into the next Semester, Coleman reflects on her very first, “I expect to write a lot better articles this semester. I kinda didn’t know what was going on, so I didn’t write as great,” she comments. “I’ll step it up for next semester by coming up with better ideas and overall better work.” Ms. Coleman has also expressed interest in becoming an editor for the paper sometime in the future.
As a member of The Catalyst, Coleman has brought “a lot of uniqueness that the class lacks,” says Jamal Holmes (12). She has quite a distinct character and an energy that is truly her own. The Catalyst adviser Mrs. Comstock also reflects on Coleman’s contributions to the class, stating, “Ms. Coleman has an insightful nature regarding investigating news as she digs into topics of her interest and shares other topics to assist her peers in their exploration. I appreciate her ability to write consistently and with maturity.” Finally, Editor-in-Chief Lily Francois (12) adds, “She sometimes does [an editor’s] work. She’s accommodating, like coming up with the word of the day and making it easier for us to grade things because she turns her work in on time.”
