Reboot Gone Wrong
The remake of the quirky and related chick flick “Mean Girls” was released in Theaters in 2004, Directed by Samantha Jayne, Arturo Preze jr, and starring Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Tina Fey, and Amanda Seyfried, and Lacy Chabert. When the movie was released, it quickly gained likeness and left an inedible mark on the movie industry. The movie’s insightful commentary about different high school dynamics gave other generations to appreciate. Years after the original film was released this year, 2024 ads and other PR marketing things finally released the Mean Girls Trail, but fans spotted that the remake was a musical; even though the original film was based on the Broadway musical, fans did not seem pleased with the thought of watching a remade musical, when comparing the two movies on rotten tomatoes the first movie was 14% higher, These number averages show that more people seem to enjoy the original film than the remake., What I want to know is why.
Many Online speculated that because the movie was remade into a musical on screen, the demographic that they were trying to reach wouldn’t go and see the film; when speaking to Saharan Greene (10th), she expressed that when she first saw ads about the Mean Girls reboot she was very excited but when focusing on the trailer more and seeing more clips leak she was later disappointed to realize the reboot was a musical,” I watched a YouTube about the mean girls reboot movie review that made good about the high school dialogue and, how the clothes looked very cheap and were very similar to fast fashion clothes seen all online.” The original movie’s wardrobe looked more expensive and high-class when comparing the two movies’ characters and outfits.
Speaking to Gigi Nathan (12th), she agreed with Saharan’s points about not wanting to watch a musical. Gigi stated, “I’ve seen the original movie, and I’ve also heard things about the musical and seen the trailers; when I realized it was a musical, I quickly lost interest and didn’t think about going to theaters to see the movie any further, Many others agreed with the statement with musical, like Aaliyah Francois (12th) she expressed that the mean girl’s movie was timeless and didn’t need to be tampered with. “Musicals aren’t really my thing”. The directors and creators didn’t do what they thought they were trying to do, which left the people they were trying to reach no interest.
