Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire is a new movie releasing in theaters on March 29th, 2024. The film is directed by Adam Wingard and stars Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Kaylee Hottle.
The Kaiju genre of movies has been defined by the prominent monsters they feature and the often-riveting special effects used to capture these monsters in action. Mothra, Rodan, King Ghidorah, and most significantly Godzilla and King Kong have driven the expansion of Kaiju-style movies. Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire hopes to continue the expansion of this genre through the inclusion of both famous monsters and visual effects. Based on the information and commercial Kensington Cobb (10) had seen for the movie, she believed that the film would have good graphic and visual quality that could enhance the narrative.
However, several other Wheeler students have questions, doubts, and apprehensions about the quality of the upcoming film and its narrative. Kaitlyn Sung (11), who had seen trailers for the movie, was confused by the addition of more giant monkeys who were like Kong, questioning whether the addition added anything to the story. Krish Chugh (10) stated that having both monsters on screen is just too much and could ruin the film’s content and plot. Sameel Mistri (10) believes that the film’s approach toward treating Godzilla and Kong as characters rather than forces of nature that the cast has to overcome is a mistake and produces worse storytelling. Wheeler students have different concerns with the movie; however, all of them may motivate students to skip out on this upcoming film.
