Summer is known for taking fun vacations to beaches and traveling, but many people stay home with nothing to do. So what should you do when you’re stuck at home during the summer?
One popular summer idea is creating a bucket list of simple activities around your area. These can be fun to write and decorate with your friends, and then you can check off the activities you do over the summer! Some of the ideas you can include are going to a drive-in movie, having a bonfire, going fruit picking, doing tie-dye, having a picnic, and many more.
Abigail Winders (11) said, “I don’t have much to do over the summer, so I would love to do some of these bucket list ideas with my friends.” Atlanta has a very nice aquarium that can make a great day trip. Also, the Braves stadium is very close by, with baseball games and activities at The Battery. Some more fun places you can visit are Andrettis, minigolf places, go-kart racing, and other outdoor activities.
Emma Mabry (11) said, “I am spending half of the summer at my dad’s house in Tennessee and a week in Costa Rica. I would like to spend some time cooking and baking. I am also going to tour Georgia Southern and do some babysitting.” Learning to bake or cook is a great idea for the summer!
Emma also said, “I would love to have some nights with my friends where we do some of the trends like a PowerPoint night or movie night. A PowerPoint night is where every person makes a PowerPoint on some funny and random topic to present to the group. Watching movies is another great idea. You can invite friends over with snacks and even have a movie marathon!
You can also take up time and make some money by getting a summer job. This can be things like lifeguarding, babysitting, swim coaching, working at a restaurant, etc. Even if you only work a couple of mornings a week, you have plenty of free time! Summer camps were popular when we were younger, but when you reach high school, you are too old for many summer camps. There is still the option of working as a camp counselor!
Olivia Hicks (11) said, “I will be coaching for my neighborhood summer swim team during June, and then I have band camp during July. But I am very excited to have lots of free time.” She is very excited to spend some time by the pool!
Other ideas of things you can do that relate to academics include things like summer internships and college tours. Evren Israel (11) said, “I am going to tour University of Florida, which I am very excited about, and my family might go to Tennessee.” Some good colleges to tour without going too far include Kennesaw State University, Georgia Southern, Georgia Tech, Georgia State University, and Georgia College. You can reach out to local organizations and go through your school to get some internships that can be very beneficial!
Overall, there are many fun activities to do even when you’re not on vacation during the summer! Work on making a creative bucket list of things to check off with your friends and family. Look around your local area for new places to explore, and find some colleges to tour! The summer goes by fast, so make sure to have some fun!
