When it comes to the recreation of fan favorite animated movies come to live action adaptations there can be a lot of controversy that come about with it. When it comes to the actor casted for the role and whether or not they fit the description of the original character or even embody that character. Some of these readaptations being Ariel, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and even soon to be how to train your dragon. Many hold different opinions on whether or not they think it matters that the actor fits the description of its character.
So here are some of your fellow wheeler students’ personal opinions on the matter. When it comes to how they feel and whether they think the actor and the character should look similar. Justice Beeler 12th, Emoni Haynes 12th, and Justyce Stewart 12th share a similar opinion on how it doesn’t really matter to them. Justice Beeler 12th specifically saying, “I don’t really care but yes I can feel like in some ways they can overdue it but I kind of like the concept because little kids of color can see themselves as the characters.” Which is true and a main reason why everyone loves to see representation of their ethnicity in characters cause it does bring a sense of place and feeling of similarity with the characters being depicted on screen. Now on the other hand Brian Patrick 12th and Emma Middleton 11th think that the character should at least share some similar factors to the original as Brian Patrick 12th says, “just to make the readaptation a little similar to the original.” Which is also a respected statement because everyone loves to see there favorite classic be readapted just the way they remembered it just in modern time.
As far as whether or not the race of a actor filling the role of a character should even matter as long as they are playing the character well justice Beeler 12th , Emma Middleton 11th , Justyce Stewart 12th , and Emoni Haynes 12th say no it shouldn’t justice Beeler 12th adding “If they play the character well then just enjoy the movie.” Brian Patrick 12th however saying “ yes it shouldn’t matter but it does play a role cause you simply do have to understand that sometimes having somebody play a role you know doesn’t fit is not logical and won’t keep the character true to itself.”
Some personal opinions they shared were Emoni Haynes 12th speaking on “I think other races need more representation so there will be no problem with it.” Meaning once we start seeing more diversity no one will have a problem with who plays what role anymore. Brian Patrick 12th own opinion is that “sometimes personally I think it can mess up the characters original self.” Lastly Emma Middleton 11th thinks that “if it’s a show coming from a book then they should honor the author and leave their character as what they were created as because its almost like rewriting someone else’s work. Now if you’re revamping a show then the character should look pretty similar if not then I think it shouldn’t have the same tittle and should be claimed as something else.” Which is understandable cause sometimes if a character is changed to much people see them as almost unrecognizable and something new altogether.
When it comes to the way people are handling how they feel about actors not looking like the characters in the animated version some are as they say blowing it out of proportion and here’s what these students have to say about the matter. Justice Beeler 12th “ I think they do take it out of hand and forget that it’s the talent that’s chosen not just the look. Which is a big point in the matter because for the most part actors are chosen for there skills to fulfill and portray there role given not just look the part alone. Now Emoni Haynes 12th agrees that its blown out of proportion and adds “just let them make there money” meaning none of it should matter a job is a job and that is there job so let them do it. Justyce Stewart 12th says “people think to much they cant even enjoy the movie because they are worried about the actors instead of the plot.” Meaning focus on what needs to be focused on. Lastly Emma Middleton 11th says “people are blowing it out of proportion for example with Halle Bailey as Ariel, she did such an amazing job on the movie and has a pure talented voice but receives so much backlash even though she was spectacular and it’s not deserved.”
Those were some of the opinions of your fellow wheeler students and how they felt about the controversy going on behind the actors being casted for certain roles. What are some of your opinions on it? Or do you not have any at all?
