The National Honor Society (NHS) is a student-led organization with the mission of bettering our local community and enhancing the learning of others. NHS provides various non-profits, events, and service groups with high-quality and useful volunteers from a community of high achievers.
The Wheeler chapter of NHS is sponsored by Mrs. Sellman and Mrs. Todoric. Mrs. Sellman took on the role in order to give back to a community that had previously done so much for her. Her main task is to allow the student officers to successfully organize and lead NHS events and NHS-sponsored service opportunities.
One of these students’ leaders is Chase (12), who joined NHS because he wanted something that would really push him to be less sporadic about community service. He also developed the app that NHS members use to keep track of their hours.
NHS sponsors a plethora of unique service opportunities, many of which are exclusive to NHS members. The Yule Log Party is the favorite of Kanushi (12), who joined NHS to make a “positive and significant impact” in society. The Yule Log Party involved leading young children through holiday-theme games with prizes at the end, and Kanushi found it fun and fulfilling.
Shachi (12), who joined NHS to launch her own service initiatives, enjoyed the NHS-sponsored tutoring at East Valley Elementary and Sope Creek Elementary. She loved the ability to see the tangible impact of her work on the students’ learning.
Finally, Shop with A Wildcat, although not primarily sponsored by NHS, is always a favorite for members looking to make the holidays a memorable experience for underprivileged children. Most NHS members participate in volunteering with Shop with A Wildcat at least once, and there are many tasks during the event that are exclusively offered to NHS members.
With the wide variety of service opportunities, all NHS members are sure to find something that fits their interests, whether its tutoring young children, playing games with the elderly, picking up litter on Gold Branch Trail, or leading tours of the Chattahoochee Nature Center. However, NHS is a big commitment, since members are required to amass twenty service hours each year, six of which must be from tutoring, and not everyone has the time or energy for the dedication necessary to graduate with the NHS seal.
NHS invitations will be sent out soon, so if you think you might be interested, keep an eye on your inbox!
