FCA Club Spotlight
FCA stands for Fellowship of Christian Athletes. This club comes together each Friday to worship, connect, and praise. Their President runs the club: Evie Tafur, who has participated since the 7th grade. Each week, they have students lead in worship and sometimes even be the speaker for that week. They will also have guest speakers lead a meeting or preach. This club gives students the ability to be praised at school and with their peers and have access to their faith that they might not otherwise have. This organization targets athletes, presenting a unique angle and offering these student-athletes a way to ensure they include their faith through sport and what that looks like in an academic setting.
FCA was an organization held at the feeder middle school as well as the High School level, so many members have known about since that time, including Evie (12), who says she “heard about it 7th grade and one of my friends kept inviting me so one day I just decided to go.” Alexis (12) also heard about FCA “in middle school through my friends who invited me. I started going then, and I had so much fun I decided to keep going in High School.” Amanda (12) says she heard about it her “sophomore year. I heard about it from the President then and even guided the school.”
The club continues its growth every week but keeps students coming back. Evie says, “What keeps me coming back is the community. It’s important and rare to have a religious community at school.” Alexis explains why she joined and stayed: “It’s important to have a way to put religion into every part of my life, including school.” Amanda shares, “I joined because I wanted to find another outlet for my faith with people my age who dealt with life similarly.”
Everyone has their preference, but Evie says her favorite part of FCA is “the worship team. It’s grown so much, and I love it.” Alexis adds, “My favorite part is worship. I like seeing my academic peers in this religious setting. It’s super cool.” Amanda agrees, saying, ” My favorite part is getting to see student speakers, friends, and people studying the word of God and sharing their wisdom with the group.”
Being that it is such a big club and has been around for so long, many memories have been made for every member. Evie says her favorite was “the tailgate for a football game. Everyone pitched in and got everyone excited. It came together well.” Alexis recalls, “I loved spirit days and greeting people. I like the gathering aspect and talking to like-minded people.” Amanda details, “My favorite memory was Freedom Week. It is FCA every day except Wednesday. It gives us more time to connect with people and gives us different ways to connect.”
FCA is an organization that welcomes all. Their mission is to spread God’s word in a school setting and offer a religious outlet to all students. They meet every Friday in the PAC at 7:30, so feel free to stop by!
