The Most Magical Breakup
From the iconic ears to the “Most magical place on Earth” Disney has taken the hearts of many people all over the world. It is no secret that there is something to enjoy in every movie, each scene bringing something, well, magical into the world. Alongside Disney, Netflix has consumed hours worth of time customers will never get back. Back in 2012, before the world of streaming took off, Disney made a valuable streaming deal with Netflix. Do not be confused, all the magical movies you love will still be on Netflix until the release date of Disney’s streaming service in 2019.
Disney is planning to open two streaming services: one for ESPN and the other for the beloved movies and shows. The ESPN platform is set to launch in a year. The company has decided to create this service due to the setback it has gone through. Recently, many cable companies have reduced package sizes to where the ESPN channels are not included. As a result, ESPN had a decrease in revenue and laid off 100 employees. The Walt Disney Company promises, “10,000 live regional, national, and international games and events a year” on their streaming service. Disney surely has big promises to keep and bigger expectations to live up to from viewers. The other platform for the transition will occur in 2019 and will feature Disney and Pixar films (live-action and animated) and content from Disney TV channels (such as Disney XD and Disney Junior). This gives Netflix the cold shoulder, leaving it in the dust. Many of the shows and movies are available to watch on Netflix as of right now. The deal the two companies made in 2012 stated that, starting in 2016, Disney was to make Netflix the exclusive streaming service for new films made by Disney, Walt Disney Animation, Marvel, and Pixar. The films would be able to appear on Netflix within the same span of time it would come onto pay-view television. This deal has only been in effect for one year and is now about to start streaming its own products.
BAMTech is to thank for all of this life altering news. BAMTech is the current streaming system behind Major League Baseball, Worldwide Wrestling Entertainment, and HBO. The Walt Disney Company placed a $1.58 billion bid in order to now be the majority share owner of the company. As Disney shaves away movies from Netflix, starting with the 2019 films, the films and shows available on Netflix right now will fade away as the deals expire. Even though it will not start affecting anyone soon, this must be a sign to watch Moana, Finding Dory, and all other childhood favorites as many times until 2019 comes.
