This year the Wheeler Wildcats softball team celebrated two students on senior night; Maya McNeal and Kieana Tucker. Both seniors had a lot of varsity experience but now are on to something new.

Maya McNeal has been on the varsity softball team for three years. Even though she had an excellent senior season, she doesn’t plan on playing in college. With being one of two seniors, Maya had to step up and lead the team. Maya states, “ Since we have many freshmen, I tried to guide them on how to think competitively and how they should always be mentally ready.” One of her main goals for this season was to hit a home run, which she accomplished at the last game of the season. Even though the team didn’t win as many games as they had hoped, she loved being around her side, the experience, and her senior season.

Kieana Tucker is a first-year softball player this season. She converted from football to softball because she “ liked being around girls more than boys.” For her first season, she’s been working very hard to be the best player she can. From working hard during practice to spending extra hours in the batting cages. Because of this being her first season playing she didn’t necessarily lead the team, but she did learn a lot from all of the teammates. One of Kieana’s major accomplishments was her very first game she hit a line drive, which isn’t very easy to do. After this season is made her find her love for the sport and would want to start a career and play in college.

Although this season didn’t go as planned, Coach Stalcup is looking forward to next year’s senior class. The Fall 2019 season’s spotlight will be on some rising seniors who are ready to this sport their all.
