At the beginning of this year, an account with only one post of an average egg appeared on Instagram; the post came with the caption, “Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)!” The image took off, and many people began reposting and shouting out the image simply as a joke, but within a matter of two weeks the Egg surpassed Kylie’s image and gained around twenty-one million likes. The egg has now double in likes and has an ever-changing fifty-two million likes as well as a whopping ten million followers on its page. After beating a seemingly impossible and ridiculous goal, what would the Egg do with its newfound fame?

Since the Eggs first post only seemed to have one goal, nothing was expected to come from the Egg and it was viewed as a “one-hit wonder.”  However, after only fourteen days, a new post was made, this time with the Egg appearing to be slightly cracked. In the next few days to come two more posts were made, each time the Egg was depicted as cracking more and more. The posts came with no caption and left people in suspense, until the fourth post was revealed with the Egg edited to look like a football, alongside the caption, “The wait is over. All will be revealed this Sunday following the Super Bowl. Watch it first, only on @hulu. #EggGang #WeGotThis #TalkingEgg.” The Egg had teamed up with Hulu and made a thirty-second video, which was aired after the Super Bowl, all with an important and fundamental message in store.

The video was all in an effort to make awareness for mental help and the importance of seeking help. The video talked about how the Egg had been cracking under all the pressure from social media and how talking to someone had bettered and fixed the “cracked” Egg. The video caused a ton of praise and awareness, and Mental Health America even reached out with a thank you. While all had begun as a joke, the ability to use the large platform in however the owner wanted came with the utmost of positive effects. Even the most un(eggs)pected of people, or in this case, an egg can have a positive impact all with the power that stems from social media.
