Capital Riots

On the 6th of January, 2021, shock and rage spread throughout the nation as the Capitol Building in Washington D.C. was stormed by an angry mob. The mob was dressed in varying outfits, some extremely offensive and provocatory, while others chose a bare-chested war-paint look. Unfortunately, the thing that connected these rioters was their unified support of our current President. Most – if not all – of the rioters were decked out in MAGA gear, waving flags and brandishing their slogan. The President did not take any authoritative action to disband the crowd, who soon defaced a national monument holding some of our country’s elected officials. He was instead quoted saying, “we can’t play into the hands of these people. We have to have peace. So go home. We love you. You’re very special.” This statement was significantly different from his outright objection to the mostly BLM protests, which he responded to on Twitter by saying, “When the Looting Starts, the Shooting Starts.”
The riots lasted throughout the day and into the night, and four civilian rioters and one police officer were all killed. Amongst the chaos, multiple homemade bombs were found, as well as a pickup truck mere miles from the Capitol Building full of automatic weapons and ammunition. By the next morning, many had taken to social media to mourn these losses, but there was also a complete mockery of the most famous civilian deaths. Even more popular were the speculations of which photos from this historical event would be in our children’s textbooks.
The assumption is that these riots directly resulted from Joe Biden officially winning the election, as the Electoral College votes were being counted at the Capitol just as the riot began. In the end, our Vice President announced that Biden had indeed secured the presidential race, with a win of 306 votes to 232. The current President has not yet officially conceded, and it is reported that he has refused to attend the official inauguration of Joe Biden into office.
This has been a very tumultuous start to the new year, and it doesn’t seem like the action is about to stop. As recently as the 12th of January, there have been sources claiming that MAGA supporters are gathering and planning protests across the country on the 20th of January, which is the day Biden will officially be inaugurated into his presidency. This shocking revelation was taken very seriously by the government and law enforcement, and the FBI has opened more than 100 cases to investigate further if these claims are valid. The Capitol’s attack has been labeled an act of terrorism and has even been compared to 9/11.
