Movie Review: Venom: Let There Be Carnage

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is the direct sequel to Venom (2018). It was released October 1st, 2021, and is one of the first superhero movies to be exclusively released to movie theaters post quarantine. Its release came with very mixed reviews from audience members, however scoring a significantly higher average rating compared to its successor. The movie follows Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy0 and a new, more humanized Venom. From spending so much time on Earth Venom has become more talkative, and more like a friend to Eddie Brock than anything else. This new version of Venom is the focus of much of the movie’s exposition. It also creates a new tone for the film compared to the last, adding more humor and fun chemistry between Venom and Eddie. This is a welcome change. It is very entertaining to watch the two go back and forth for the opening section of the movie. However, past this opening section, the plot feels a bit rushed. We are immediately introduced to Cleatus Cassidy (Woody Harrelson) without much backstory besides a brief flashback of him and his lover. After this, it isn’t long before all carnage breaks loose. Woody Harrelson does a fantastic job of portraying the character, acting convincingly unhinged. The character can be truly scary, going around doing whatever he pleases with an unnerving smile on his face. Besides the rushed story, the CGI and visuals are stunning and there were multiple times I was left in awe due to the spectacle of the fights. Overall, this movie is a fun watch and fans of the character Venom will enjoy this addition to the series.
