Staff Spotlight: Spencer Schmookler

Spencer Schmookler

Spencer Schmookler

Spencer Schmookler is a fluff piece editor and third-year writer of the Catalyst. Spencer is renowned for his vibrant and bubbly personality and his consistent productivity. Over the years, he has grown to become one of the most treasured members of the class. Spencer is a constant source of joy, laughter, and energy for all journalism students.

Spencer enjoys the class because of its “free-range environment where we can write about various topics and express our opinions on all issues.” He also says that the course has helped him become more comfortable in general conversation and interviewing others. The program supervisor, Mrs. Comstock (Language Arts), also echoes those ideas: “I have known Spencer since his sophomore year. Then, he was a quiet, timid student who diligently completed his work. Since he has blossomed in the classroom with personality and pizazz as a staff writer”. As an individual, Spencer has numerous contributions to the Catalyst, including multiple publications conjoined with his natural vibrancy and helpfulness.

Fluff piece editors and colleagues of Spencer, Lily Francois (11) and Damaj’ia Wilburn (12), also left positive comments on Spencer’s presence. Lily describes Spencer as “unique and interesting. He’s nice, he’s funny, he can be a bit dramatic at times too, in a good way”. Lily also mentions how much of an assistance Spencer has been to the editing team, “he takes a lot of workload off Damaj’ia and me.” Damaj’ia adds to this by saying, “he’s a great editor; he makes sure all of his work is done on time.” So far as an editor, Spencer has reviewed and published roughly five articles.

As described by the classroom, Spencer’s best traits are his likability, approachability, humor, personality, dedication, and reliability. Throughout his three years in journalism, Spencer has proven himself time and time again as one of the most dependable and delightful writers at the Catalyst. Unfortunately, this is his last year in the program, as he’s slated to graduate this May. However, Spencer still has several articles to both write and edit. The Catalyst thanks him for his time and commitment to the class.
